Our Vacation Manager Gail Ducharme shares how her recent travel experience reignited her passion for river cruising.
By Gail Ducharme, Vacation Manager | September 2, 2025
I’ve just returned from an unforgettable 10-day river cruise along the Seine, sailing from Paris to Normandy—and I’m still soaking it all in. From the charming towns to the seamless travel experience, I was reminded why river cruising is one of my favourite ways to explore Europe. Here’s why I love it—and why you might too.
Stress-Free Travel Between Ports
Spending three or four hours on a coach bus just to get from one place to the next is not my idea of a relaxing vacation. Trying to take photos through a bus window as you are moving at 90km per hour, being stuck in one seat for hours, and dealing with motion sickness on winding roads — it’s just not for me. River cruising offers something completely different, the travel between destinations is part of the appeal! You’re not confined to a seat while travelling — you’re free to move around, relax, and truly enjoy the journey. You might be sipping a coffee on the sun deck, lounging in the panoramic lounge or dining with floor-to-ceiling window views, or enjoying the quiet comfort of your own balcony if you need some down time. The best part? You’re still getting from one incredible destination to the next — but without the stress. It’s travel that feels effortless, and that’s what makes it so special.
Exploration From Prime Locations
Location, location, location! We all know how important it is to be right in the heart of the action when you travel. Being able to walk to restaurants, attractions, and entertainment makes a huge difference. Getting stuck out on the outskirts — where everything requires a taxi or shuttle can really take away from the experience.

The prime location is another reason I love river cruising in Europe. Many of these cities were built centuries ago, with the river as their main transportation route. That means your ship docks right in the city center — often just steps away from historic landmarks, charming cafés, and bustling markets. No long transfers, no wasted time — just easy access to everything you came to see. The Eiffel tower was a 15 minute walk from our ship. It’s one of those little things that ends up making a big impact on your trip.
Relaxed Mornings
Early mornings and rushed breakfasts are not a vacation for me, especially when it involves putting my suitcase outside the door before sunrise and scrambling onto a coach. Sound familiar? If you’re not a morning person (like me), this probably sounds like a terrible vacation! That’s why I love river cruising. I can ease into the day—wake up around 7am, sip a fresh coffee delivered via room service, while watching the scenery drift by from my balcony. No rush, no stress—just the perfect start before heading out to explore a new destination.
Avoid the Crowds and Special Experiences
When clients ask about travelling through Europe in peak season, my first tip is always: pack your patience. Popular cities and landmarks draw massive crowds, especially with large coach tours all hitting the same sites at once. Expect long lines, elbow-to-elbow photo ops, and a lot of waiting around. It’s all part of the experience… but let’s be honest—it can take a bit of the magic out of your trip.
River cruising changes all of that. You wake up right in the heart of your next destination. Even better? Many river cruise lines offer early admission to major sites. You get in 30 minutes before the general public, which means no crowds, no waiting, and photos that capture the place, not just the people in it. It makes the experience feel more immersive, more personal, and more like you’re stepping into history than fighting through it.
And then there are the hidden gems that you’d never find on your own. One night, after dinner, we strolled from the ship through a quiet old orchard to a walled castle, where a small group of us were treated to a private classical concert. It felt like a scene from a movie—but it was real. And unforgettable.
The All-Inclusive Travel Experience
One of the biggest perks of river cruising—and something that really sets it apart—is the all-inclusiveness. When you’re travelling independently or even on a traditional coach tour, the extras can really start to add up. Meals, drinks, tips, and excursions often come with surprise price tags. You end up feeling like you’re constantly reaching for your wallet every time you want to enjoy something.
With a river cruise, it’s a totally different experience. Most everything is included—your meals (often gourmet), wine and beer with lunch and dinner, guided tours, and even gratuities. It’s all taken care of before you ever leave home. That means no budgeting on the go—just good food, great company, and incredible experiences… all without worrying about the bill. Honestly, it’s pretty nice to leave your wallet in the safe and just enjoy the journey.
I hope you consider the magic of a river cruise the next time you are thinking about your next vacation! You’ll likely come back just as enthusiastic about them as I am!
